There are some litters that come together with careful planning, and there are others that take years of patience, trust, and the generosity of many people. This breeding is very much the latter.
It has been nearly three years since Rosabel Beagles welcomed a litter. During that time, plans changed, breedings were missed, dogs were retired, and there were moments when the future of the breeding program felt uncertain. Looking back now, those years were not simply a period of waiting—they were years spent learning, growing, and preparing for the right opportunity.
This litter represents far more than the pairing of two exceptional Beagles. It represents the relationships that make preservation breeding possible.
Penny has spent the past several months with my mentor, Suzanne Telford of Telford Beagles, where this breeding has been carefully planned and carried out. It was Suzanne who was entrusted with the final frozen semen from the late Quintin, a dog whose influence has been felt throughout the Canadian Beagle community. Being selected as the recipient of that final opportunity is both an honour and a responsibility that I do not take lightly.
This litter also represents the support of family. Penny has always been Lydia’s dog, and allowing her to spend months away from home so this breeding could happen was no small sacrifice. Like every worthwhile endeavor, this one required everyone to contribute in different ways.
In many respects, this litter reminds me of the old saying, “It takes a village.” Behind every carefully planned breeding are mentors willing to share decades of knowledge, breeders who preserve bloodlines for future generations, owners who entrust others with treasured dogs, veterinarians whose skill makes modern reproduction possible, and families who quietly support the work behind the scenes. No preservation breeder works alone.
For that reason, this litter feels especially meaningful.
The Sire
Telford’s I’m a Big Shot Too “Shotsy”
Shotsy represents generations of thoughtful breeding and careful selection. He is a balanced, moderate male with beautiful breed type, effortless movement, and the cheerful temperament that makes the Beagle such a beloved companion. Although he never had the opportunity for a lengthy show career himself, his quality is evident both in his structure and in the remarkable pedigree behind him.
Perhaps even more significant is what Shotsy represents. He was produced using the final frozen semen from Quintin, preserving a bloodline that might otherwise have been lost. Through this breeding, that legacy has the opportunity to continue into another generation.
The Dam

Penny is everything I hoped she would become when she joined Rosabel Beagles. Feminine, balanced, and full of personality, she has matured into a lovely young bitch with a beautiful outline, sound movement, and the merry temperament that is so characteristic of the breed.
She has earned points toward her Canadian Championship while being handled by Lydia in Junior Handling, making her accomplishments even more meaningful to our family. At home, Penny is affectionate, confident, and joyful—a dog who is as happy exploring the yard as she is curled up with the children.
Her combination of structure, temperament, and pedigree make her an ideal complement to Shotsy.
Looking Ahead
My goal with every breeding is simple: to produce healthy, structurally sound Beagles with the classic type, temperament, and versatility that have made the breed such a treasured family companion for generations.
I have great respect for the dogs behind both Penny and Shotsy, and even greater respect for the breeders who devoted years to preserving those bloodlines. This litter is one small part of that continuing story, and I feel incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to help carry it forward.
If all goes as planned, puppies are expected around July 2, 2026.
As always, puppies will be raised in our home with an emphasis on health, temperament, early socialization, and lifelong support for their families. I look forward to sharing updates as this exciting journey continues.

Some breedings are planned because two dogs complement one another on paper. Others become part of a much larger vision, representing years of careful planning and the direction a breeding program hopes to take in the future.
This pairing between Flora and Hero has been in my plans for a long time.
While we eagerly await confirmation of pregnancy, I am excited about what this breeding has the potential to produce. If successful, puppies are expected to arrive in August 2026.
Hero and Flora each bring qualities that I value highly in the Beagle. Together, they represent the type of dog I hope to continue producing at Rosabel Beagles—sound in structure, balanced in temperament, and capable of excelling both as cherished family companions and in the show ring.
The Sire
Telford’s Worth Fighting For “Hero”
Hero has been an important part of my breeding program since the day he arrived. A Canadian Champion and Best Puppy in Show winner, he possesses the substance, presence, and breed type that consistently catch the attention of judges.
Hero is a masculine, well-boned male with beautiful breed character and an affectionate, steady temperament. He is equally comfortable competing in the ring as he is relaxing at home with the family, and his easygoing nature has made him a joy to live with.
Beyond his own accomplishments, Hero carries generations of thoughtfully preserved bloodlines. His pedigree reflects decades of careful breeding by dedicated preservation breeders, and I am excited for the opportunity to see those qualities carried forward.
The Dam
Telford’s Ring Around the Rosabel “Flora”
Flora has always been a special dog in my program. She is a moderate, athletic 15-inch bitch with exceptional movement, excellent hunting instinct, and the cheerful personality that makes the Beagle such a wonderful companion.
Although showing has never been Flora’s favorite pastime, she has many qualities that I admire. She is naturally athletic, structurally balanced, and possesses an effortless, ground-covering gait. At home she is intelligent, affectionate, and happiest when she has a job to do, whether that is exploring the property or following a scent.
Flora represents many of the traits I hope to preserve in future generations, making her an ideal match for Hero.
Why This Breeding?
One of the greatest joys of preservation breeding is looking beyond individual dogs and considering what they may contribute to future generations.
Hero brings substance, breed type, and ring presence. Flora contributes athleticism, balance, natural movement, and instinct. Together, I hope they will produce puppies that are moderate, structurally sound, and true to the Beagle’s original purpose while remaining wonderful companions for active families.
Every breeding is planned with the goal of improving upon the generation before it, and I believe Hero and Flora complement one another in meaningful ways.
Looking Ahead
As with every planned litter at Rosabel Beagles, health, temperament, and structure remain my highest priorities.
If this breeding is successful, puppies are expected in August 2026 and will be raised in our home with extensive early socialization and careful attention to their physical and emotional development. From their earliest days, they will be introduced to the sights, sounds, and experiences that help prepare them for life as confident companions and capable representatives of the breed.
