Guardian Homes

Choosing a guardian home is very similair to choosing any potential family for our dogs, but the requirements are a little differant. It’s important that all gaurdian situations are extremely well layed out and all expections for both breeder and families are established as this becomes a long term relationship. We are looking for families who want to work with us to help better the breed and willing to be good ambassadors through mentorship, training, getting involved in dog sports or therapy opportunities or just providing the very best care for our up and coming breeding prospects Our requirement for guardian homes is that you must be willing a 3 hour drive from Spruce Grove, Alberta and willing to bring your dog back to us on a yearly basis for health testing, evaluation, or breeding. Any costs associated with those things are the responsibility of the breeder, everything else related to the dog is at your discretion and responsibility, as long as the dog is kept in peak physical condition. We strongly encourage you to get involved in something to keep thier body and mind fit! Gaurdian homes must keep their puppy or dog intact, and cannot own any other intact dogs. Even after we officially retire these dogs from gaurdian positions and pass full ownership over to the families, we are committed to being there for the life of your dog. 

I wish I could keep every single puppy that I breed, but that’s just not practical, nor is it fair to the dogs I breed as they could benefit from homes that are able to give them a little more individualized care and attention while we wait to see how they grow. However, sometimes there is a puppy that particullarily catches my eye and I want to watch grow and mature and hopefully breed too, but do not have the space to keep. Sometimes these puppies turn out exceptional and I want to breed to them, and sometimes they mature as lovely pet puppies and the gaurdian home never has to bring the puppy back to the farm for an official visit.  

I only have 1-2 gaurdian puppy placements at the most in a year, and sometimes not even that many. They will almost always be males. Most often it is puppies, but sometimes it is an older male who we are not breeding to very often, but want to keep his genetics available if a perfect female comes along. Depending on the dog, and expectations around the placement, prices for guardian puppies vary.

I will not place a guardian puppy or adult dog in a home that is a first time dog home. Unfortunately, because the puppies must remain intact for a number of years, I need to know there is some understanding as to what this entails. Homes must have a fenced yard, commit to at least basic obedience school training, regular vet visits, keeping the dog at an ideal weight and mental fitness, within easy driving distance to my farm, inform me of any address changes, vacation plans when taking the dog, and possibly bringing the dog back to Rosabel Beagles for breeding purposes, evaluation, health testing …. These visits may sometimes require the dog staying a few days. I also ask that all guardian homes have updated pet insurance while the dog is available to me. 

Guardian homes quietly transfer to forever homes once the puppy has matured and we have evaluated whether they would be an asset to our breeding program, or whether they would be better as a beloved pet. All decisions regarding the training, well being, health and overall  responsibility of the dog are that of the family. I am available to mentor and advise in all those situations. The dogs health and happiness come first.  I am very excited to work with families for an opportunity to place some special puppies over the next few years.
